New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
